Weißenkirchen in the Wachau valley
The majestic Gothic parish church of Weissenkirchen rises among sunny, terraced vineyards, the river Danube and green forests. Together with the villages Joching, Woesendorf and St. Michael it forms the biggest winegrowing community in the Wachau.
In the middle rises the fortified church of Weißenkirchen, which can be seen from almost every point in the area. The late medieval fortifications were built around 1530 and are largely preserved. Together with the Teisenhoferhof below, it forms a uniform weir system. The Teisenhoferhof, one of the most beautiful Renaissance courtyards in the Wachau, is part of the imposing fortifications of the church.
The romantic village has preserved its authenticity and is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the word heritage centre Wachau.
Enjoy wines, culture and various local treats in the heart of the Wachau.
Wachau
Wachau is full of hidden gems. Many places along the river where you stop offer cultural and natural highlights of the region.
One of the best ways to experience the Wachau landscape is to trace the route of the Danube River as it snakes its way through the countryside.
This beautiful stretch of the Danube has inspired romantic legends for centuries.
One Story tells of King Richard the Lionheart of England who was imprisoned in a castle (Ruine Dürnstein) here.
It is undeniable that the beauty of the agricultural land of the Wachau surrounds the Danube.
The Wachau offers a perfectly preserved medieval landscape – including the architecture in the towns and villages – which has continued to change over time at the human pace.
